Adolescence is the twilight period between childhood and youth, that is full of joy and challenges, This is the best phase or life, which is filled with immense possibilities, hopes, inspirations, fantasies, uncertainties, toil and high drama. It is only later we realise, how much OUt future is connected with this most dramatic and thrilling stage of life.
I experienced joy on adolescence for the strict discipline of school became passé, replacing it with the thrill of going to college and making new friends. My excellent grades ICSS I called for celebration, which led to partying with friends, watching movies, chatting on the internet and playing cricket. This was a great respite after the gruelling boards examinations, which even my parents did not grudge. Gossiping endlessly with friend on phone and playing pranks, was the order of the day. However at home I needed my space. No more cuddling up to parents, for it now seemed foolish and childish. In the privacy of the room my fantasies took flight, making me dream my aspiration and ambition.
Being obsessed with looks is an important characteristic of an adolescent. Hence I would spend considerable time in front of a mirror, aping the youth icons in mannerism and style, Glossing over fashion magazines and watching television serials became a hobby. This together with harmless pranks between friends, added to the joy and merrymaking.
However this joy and euphorbia soon evaporated as the first quarterly examinations approached. Back to books and burning the mid night oil did not help, for the not good grades told it all. Realization soon dawned that resting on my laurels would get me nowhere. To achieve my ambition of becoming an engineer from the hallow portals of IIT, I would have to study hard. Picking up the gauntlet, I firmly resolved to focus on my studies. The strenuous routine soon began to take its toll. My pale cheeks and loss of appetite did not go unnoticed by my mother. Her compassion and counselling was a divine help, which motivated me to strive harder. Nevertheless, the doubt and underlying fear persisted, giving me sleepless nights, often making me sit up in bed perspiring profusely.
Besides challenges on the academic front, I faced difficulties in the social and emotional front. Having grown up physically, I am expected to behave more responsibly and lend a hand to my parents in their daily chores. On the emotional front, I need to show maturity in handling heartaches and relationships, which can be potentially damaging, if not handled carefully.
All this makes adolescence a very crucial phase of my life, which can make or mar my future. Though it is full of joy and happiness, being bereft of any responsibility, it throws up numerous challenges, which would ultimately moulds my future.
