“Things that were hard to bear are sweet to remember,” said the Roman philosopher L A Seneca. Memories whether good or bad are important ‘life lessons,’ which play an important role in our life. However we tend to remember bad experience the most, often forgetting the good times. Nevertheless it is a powerful attribute only possessed by humans which make him the crown of creation.

 

Childhood Memories enables us to remember things or experiences over a long period of time, sometimes even a lifetime.  Lapse in memory makes us forget the past, which can be detrimental and would deprive us of learning from experience.  Memory is like a teacher, constantly guiding us in our day to day life. Thus while a bad experience deters us from repeating the same in future, a good experience motivate us to put in an extra effort to succeed.

It provides important ‘life lessons’ which can help us to either succeed or fail in life. It starts from early childhood, ‘The lessons learnt in school and college help us in our profession and career. It is tested in competitive examinations to select people for higher a career.

 

Besides its important role in education the early childhood memories also influence  the future. Thus the harsh childhood memories of poverty, propelled Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King to work for the poor and the blacks. This led to the abolition of the abhorrent practice of slavery and apartheid in America, Mahatma Gandhi on being thrown out of a train compartment, reserved for only whites in South Africa, resolved to fight against British imperialism. On the other hand the bad experience early in life made Adolf Hitler hate the Jews. This led to heinous crimes against them and also ruined his country in the aftermath of the Second World War. Undoubtedly early experiences in life can make or even mar the future.

It is therefore important to cherish good moments in life and not let bad moments cloud the future. Since memory enables learning, we should remember good things and learn from bad experiences, so that we do not repeat them again. Moreover since life is dynamic, we should not solely relay on past experience to face the future challenges, for different situations require different actions.

A good memory is very important to be successful in life. It keeps the mental faculty active and alert. It also enables us to revel the happy moments and learn from the not so happy experiences. This is for in the words of the Italian poet Cesare Pavese “We don’t remember days, we remember moments,” which make life worth living.”
