“Reading is to the mind as exercise is to the body,” said Joseph Addison. Keeping fit is synonymous with being physically fit and in good health, for ‘health is wealth’. A healthy man lives fully, enjoying its pleasures, while one who neglects health lives in pain and misery with age. However it is unfortunate to find people relentlessly pursuing their ambition, oblivious to the above fact of life only to regret it later.

Keeping fit is not an option but a necessity to live a happy life. This is for  state the body affects the state of the mind. A healthy person views things clearly, calmly and without prejudice. His action and decision are more practical and logical and is hence more successful in life. We owe it not only to ourselves, but to our family, friends and the society to stay physically and mentally fit.

Furthermore health has a direct impact on our personality. A healthy person is generally more confident, self assured, sociable and energetic. His positive attitude inspires colleagues and friends. Being unhampered by ailments, he is more productive than others who have impaired health.

This health consciousness has off late become a fad. People, especially the youth, now go to great length to keep their body in shape. This is evident in the mushrooming of health clubs, clinics and gyms which abound in the cities. They lure clients with promise of making them slim and healthy, by reducing their excessive fat in weeks. This can however prove dangerous in the long run, because of the unscientific methods adopted by them, like excessive fasting, use of drugs or through surgery. It is therefore best to lead a normal life and observe the basic laws of health, to stay physically fit and healthy.

The basic ‘laws of good health’ relate to the food we eat, the amount of physical exercise we do, our cleanliness, rest and relaxation. Like an engine, our body too needs fuel. which is the right and sufficient quantity of food. Too little or too much or the wrong kind of food, can lead to undernourishment or malnutrition, both of which are anathema to good health and fitness.

Besides healthy and nutritious food, regular exercise is also very essential. This is for long period of disuse rust a machine, similarly lack of physical exercise makes muscles tabby, and body lethargic. It is therefore necessary to keep the body in proper shape, by doing regular exercises or by going out for long walks in the morning, or evening. While exercise tones up the muscles, regular meditation and yoga for thirty minutes or more, makes one more fresh and energetic . It is also known to reduce the ravages of ageing for the middle aged and the elderly. This supplemented with cleanliness and hygiene, keeps away disease and ailments.

However unlike a machine, the body needs rest at regular intervals. A minimum of six to seven hours sleep is necessary for the body to function optimally. Infringement of the basic laws of good health, like working late hours, ignoring physical exercise, eating junk food cause various ailments like, hypertension, heart attacks, and other deadly diseases. These besides impairing the working potential of a person, eventually cause untimely death.

Keeping fit and healthy is therefore not an option but a necessity, for without it all wealth, fame and power, can bring no enjoyment. Therefore to feel `fit as a fiddle you must tone down to middle’.
